At KS5 students will continue to follow our 12 week cycle system ensuring that they can approach subjects in depth, gaining the cultural capital needed to succeed and that we have the time built in to ensure any gaps in knowledge are filled before we move forwards.
Daily tutorials, mentoring and enrichment are also compulsory aspects of our curriculum. Exceptional students will have 20 hours a year to work on their extended project qualification, all students will participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze or Gold award and every students will participate in an exciting enrichment programme designed to build resilience, leadership and aspiration.
Weeks 1-10: Teaching and Formative Assessment
We believe that teaching a topic for a longer period of time allows scholars to understand it in real depth exploring whole texts, context and wider case studies in a way that might not be possible in shorter periods. Students complete multiple choices quizzes and mid-cycle assessments to ensure they remain on track and have opportunities to improve and close gaps.
Week 11: Assessment Week
Final assessments encompass a range of exam style questions alongside multiple choice knowledge tests and reading assessments.
In Year 13, students complete two mock examinations before the final national qualifications in the summer term.
Where possible, we use the same assessment as other schools in our trust so that we can get a more accurate picture of the progress and attainment of our pupils.
Week 12: Super Teaching Week
On the first Monday of every last week in each cycle teachers are left to identify the trends and big picture emerging from the outcomes of the knowledge, reading and final assessments. As departments they then plan for the remaining four days of the week to deliver teaching specifically designed to close gaps in skills and knowledge.
The Sixth Form Team will monitor student progress very carefully to ensure that all students achieve their full potential. Student progress is measured through ongoing in-class assessment, assessments in week 12 and through two mock exam periods in Year 13, and national exams.
The grades achieved in subject based Common Assessed Tasks are reported regularly, along with a Learner Habits Grade for each subject studied.
